Magic Chef MCWC12B Discontinued – Best Alternatives

The Magic Chef MCWC12B, a 12-bottle thermoelectric cooler, is no longer on sale, and three current 12-bottle units cover the same job.

The Amazon page for the Magic Chef MCWC12B no longer offers the product for sale, and the manufacturer has not said why. If you want the same size and the same quiet thermoelectric cooling, the Koolatron WC12 12 Bottle is the closest match, and it reaches lower temperatures than the Magic Chef did.

Best Replacement Options

Koolatron WC12 12 Bottle

Koolatron WC12 12 Bottle – Best Overall Replacement

The WC12 holds the same 12 standard bottles with the same thermoelectric, single zone design, so it slots into the role the Magic Chef MCWC12B filled. Its listed range of 46-66 F goes lower than the 54-66 F our original review recorded for the Magic Chef, which makes it far more useful for whites. It is narrower at 10.25 in wide but taller at 25.25 in, and it adds a key lock. Owners give it 4.2 of 5 from 301 ratings; see our Koolatron WC12 review.

Ivation IV-FWCT121B 12 Bottle

Ivation IV-FWCT121B 12 Bottle – Also Worth a Look

Another 12-bottle thermoelectric single zone unit, with a listed range of 46-64 F, touch controls with a settings lock and a key lock. It has by far the largest owner record of the three at 4.1 of 5 from 2,017 ratings, but 13 percent of those are one-star, so it is not a trouble-free pick. It is tall and slim at 10.4 W by 20.3 D by 25.6 H in. Read our Ivation IV-FWCT121B review before you decide.

Schmecke 12 Bottle Compressor

Schmecke 12 Bottle Compressor – Best Compressor Alternative

If the Magic Chef ever struggled in a warm room, this is the change to make: same 12-bottle capacity, but compressor cooling and a listed range of 41-64 F that covers whites and sparkling. It carries a key lock and holds 4.4 of 5 from 934 ratings. The trade-offs are a heavier cabinet at 37.5 lb and listing dimensions that look swapped, so confirm the real size with the seller before you measure your space. There is no full review yet; the Schmecke brand guide covers the range.

Why the MCWC12B Was Discontinued

The Amazon page for this model (B005QN4JLM) no longer offers the product for sale. The manufacturer has not said why. I will not guess at a date or a reason. What the record does show is a small thermoelectric unit in a category that has moved steadily toward compressor cooling, and a temperature range narrower than either current thermoelectric pick on this page.

What It Did Well

  • Twelve standard bottles on three chrome racks, four bottles to a rack, as recorded in our original review.
  • A modest footprint of 14.2 W by 20.1 D by 19 H in, low enough to sit on a counter.
  • Thermoelectric cooling, which means no compressor and very little vibration.

Where It Fell Short

  • A recorded range of 54-66 F, which suits reds but cannot bring whites or sparkling down to a proper serving temperature.
  • Thermoelectric cooling depends on the room; in a warm kitchen it loses ground.
  • No lock, as recorded in our original review.

Market Context

Compressor units such as the Schmecke now exist at 12 bottles, and even the thermoelectric picks here, the Koolatron WC12 and the Ivation IV-FWCT121B, reach lower temperatures than the MCWC12B did. For background on the two cooling types, see how thermoelectric wine coolers work and our compressor cooling guide. Other Magic Chef models are listed on the Magic Chef brand page.

The pattern is clear: both current thermoelectric picks are narrower and taller than the Magic Chef, so check the height under any cabinet before you order. If you need help sizing a spot, the space calculator does the arithmetic.

Buying Used – A Reality Check

Before You Buy a Used Magic Chef MCWC12B

  • Thermoelectric modules, fans and control boards for this model are not something Wine Cellar Diva can source, and a failed part may end the unit’s life.
  • A used unit comes with no warranty, and you have no way to know how many hours its thermoelectric module and fan have already run.
  • Even in perfect working order, it still cannot chill whites below 54 F. For most buyers, a new 12-bottle unit is the better use of the money.

For Current Owners

Keeping Yours Running

Give the unit space around the back and sides so the heat sink can vent, keep it out of direct sun and away from the oven, and dust the rear vents every few months. Keep the room as cool as you can, because thermoelectric units only cool so far below room temperature. When it no longer holds a steady setting, or the fan runs constantly while the cabinet stays warm, it is time to replace it.

Questions Readers Ask

Can I still buy the Magic Chef MCWC12B?

Not new from Amazon. The listing no longer offers it for sale. You may find a used or old stock unit elsewhere, but check its condition carefully.

What replaced the Magic Chef MCWC12B?

Magic Chef has not named a direct successor. The closest current match is the Koolatron WC12 12 Bottle, which keeps the same capacity and cooling type and reaches 46 F.

Are parts still available?

Wine Cellar Diva has no parts source for this model. Your best route is to contact Magic Chef directly and ask whether any service parts remain.

Should I buy a used one?

Only if it is nearly free and you store reds alone. The 54-66 F range and the lack of a warranty make a new replacement the safer choice.

Is the magic chef mcwc12b good for white wine?

Not really. Its recorded range bottoms out at 54 F, which is warmer than most whites are served. The Koolatron WC12 and the Ivation IV-FWCT121B go down to 46 F, and the Schmecke compressor unit to 41 F.

Is a compressor cooler better than thermoelectric for 12 bottles?

In a warm room, usually yes, because a compressor holds its setting regardless of the room. Thermoelectric units vibrate less. Our thermoelectric guide explains the trade-offs.

What to Buy Instead

The closest current equivalent to the Magic Chef MCWC12B is the Koolatron WC12 12 Bottle, because it keeps the 12-bottle thermoelectric design and cools lower. It is taller than the Magic Chef, so measure first.
