Allavino vs EuroCave: Which Wine Cabinet Should You Buy?
EuroCave is the French cabinet many collectors dream about, and Allavino is the American cooler you can order today. The right one depends on your room, your cabinetry and how you plan to buy.
The Essentials
EuroCave builds premium wine cabinets in France with heating as well as cooling, humidity control and a charcoal air filter, which suits long-term aging in a room that gets cold. Allavino builds compressor wine refrigerators in the mid-range to premium tiers, and its large towers vent through the front so they can be built into a standard 24-inch opening. In the United States, EuroCave is sold only through Wine Enthusiast, and no EuroCave cabinet could be ordered on Amazon when we checked on October 6, 2026. For most buyers who want a large cabinet they can order on Amazon and build in, the Allavino VSWR177-1SR20 is our pick. Choose EuroCave if your cabinet will stand in a cold basement or you want humidity control for wine you plan to age for years.

Allavino or EuroCave: Which Brand Fits Your Space?
People who compare Allavino with EuroCave are usually choosing between two kinds of wine storage. EuroCave makes wine cabinets designed first for aging wine, with the climate control to match. Allavino makes compressor wine refrigerators designed to fit into a kitchen or bar, many of them built into cabinetry.
The companies are very different too. EuroCave was founded in 1976 in Fourmies, in northern France, and says it designs and manufactures all of its wine cabinets in France. Allavino is a family-run San Diego company that says it has been in business since 1997. In the United States, Wine Enthusiast describes itself as the exclusive distributor of EuroCave, so you buy a EuroCave through Wine Enthusiast rather than on Amazon.
How this comparison was made
I have spent over ten years testing and reviewing wine coolers, wine cellar equipment, and wine-related gear, and tracking how it actually holds up over time. No unit on this page was bench-tested. The comparison uses each maker’s published specifications, the Wine Enthusiast spec sheets for EuroCave’s US models, and the Amazon listings as they stood on October 6, 2026. Where a figure comes from a retailer rather than the manufacturer, the page says so.
What to Compare Between Allavino and EuroCave
Capacity and Size
The closest match in size is Allavino’s 24-inch FlexCount II tower against EuroCave’s La Premiere L. The Allavino VSWR177-1SR20 holds 177 bottles in a cabinet 23.5 inches wide, 27 inches deep and 71.5 inches tall. Wine Enthusiast lists the EuroCave La Premiere L at 26.8 inches wide, 28.3 inches deep and 71.85 inches tall, holding 146 bottles as shipped on 11 shelves, or up to 230 bottles with shelves removed and bottles stacked.
So the EuroCave is about 3 inches wider and a little deeper, and it holds fewer bottles on shelves. That is a design choice: EuroCave’s beechwood shelves are made to hold bottles of every shape, including Champagne and Burgundy, while Allavino’s 177 assumes standard Bordeaux bottles on glide-out shelves.
Technology and Performance
This is where EuroCave earns its reputation. Wine Enthusiast describes EuroCave cabinets as having both cooling and heating, so the cabinet can hold its set temperature when the room around it is colder than the wine. The La Premiere L is listed for a room between 32 and 86 F. Allavino’s VSWR177-1 manual asks for a room between 60 and 90 F, so an Allavino is not built for a cold room.
EuroCave also manages humidity. The La Premiere has a humidity cassette, a built-in hygrometer and alarms, and EuroCave says its Pure range holds humidity at around 60 to 70 percent. A charcoal filter keeps odors out of the cabinet. The Allavino models we review list compressor cooling with fan-forced circulation, but no humidity control.
Temperature ranges are close. The La Premiere L sets between 43 and 64 F at one temperature. The Allavino VSWR177-1SR20 sets between 41 and 64 F.
Important Consideration
Humidity matters most for wine you plan to keep for many years under natural cork. If your bottles are opened within a year or two, a well-made compressor cooler at a steady 55 F does the job, and the extra climate control is not something you will notice in the glass.
Noise and Vibration
Wine Enthusiast lists a noise rating of 38 dBA for both the La Premiere L and the Pure L Dual Zone. Allavino does not publish a noise rating for the towers we review. Both brands use compressors, so expect some cycling sound. If the cabinet is going into a bedroom or a quiet office, EuroCave is the one with a published figure to plan around.
Installation and Placement
This is where Allavino earns its place. Its FlexCount II and Reserva towers vent through the front and are listed for built-in or freestanding use in a standard 24-inch opening. The EuroCave La Premiere L and Pure L vent at the back and are listed as freestanding by Wine Enthusiast. EuroCave does sell separate built-in lines, Inspiration and Performance, but the Inspiration range tops out at 89 bottles.
Placement Alert
Do not build a rear-venting cabinet into cabinetry. A La Premiere or Pure enclosed on all sides has nowhere to release its heat and will run hot and cycle constantly. If the cabinet must be built in, choose a front-venting Allavino tower or one of EuroCave’s built-in models.
Price Ranges and Value
EuroCave sits in a higher price tier than Allavino. You pay for French manufacture, heating as well as cooling, humidity control and the brand’s long record with collectors. Allavino’s large towers are premium purchases too, but they are priced against other American and Asian-built compressor coolers.
The warranties are closer than the prices. Wine Enthusiast lists 1 year parts and labor and 5 years on the sealed system, parts only, for the EuroCave models we checked. Allavino covers parts and labor for 1 year, then compressor parts only through year 5.
Our Top Pick
Allavino VSWR177-1SR20: 177 bottles at one setting between 41 and 64 F, front venting for a 24-inch opening, and available to order on Amazon as the left-hinge model. Read the full review.
Where to Buy Our Picks

Allavino VSWR177-1SR20 177-Bottle Single Zone – Best Overall
177 bottles at one setting between 41 and 64 F, in the same front-venting 23.5-inch cabinet as the dual zone tower. A good fit for a big collection of one wine type. Amazon lists the left-hinge version. See the full review.

Allavino VSWR172-2SR20 172-Bottle Dual Zone – Best Dual Zone
172 bottles in two zones, 40-55 F and 55-65 F, on glide-out shelves. It vents through the front and fits a standard 24-inch opening. On Amazon it is sold as the left-hinge VSWR172-2SL20, so check the hinge side before you order. See the full review.

Allavino VSWR56-1BL20 56-Bottle Single Zone – Best Mid-Size
56 bottles at one temperature in a cabinet 23.4 inches wide and 33.9 inches tall. It vents through the front, so it can be built in under a counter. See the full review.

Ca’Lefort 24 Inch 52 Bottle Dual Zone – Best European Look for Less
A built-in dual zone cooler that, to my eye, looks on par with some pricier EuroCave models. It does not have EuroCave’s heating or humidity control, so choose it for the look and the price, not as a like-for-like replacement. See the full review.
Allavino vs EuroCave by Use Case
Built into kitchen cabinetry
Buy the Allavino VSWR177-1SR20 for one temperature or the Allavino VSWR172-2SR20 for two zones. Both fit a 24-inch opening and vent through the front. EuroCave’s large cabinets are freestanding, and its built-in Inspiration range holds 89 bottles at most.
A cold basement or garage
This is the clearest case for EuroCave. The La Premiere L is listed for a room as cold as 32 F because it can heat as well as cool. Allavino’s manual asks for a room above 60 F, and a cooler without heating can let the wine drift colder than its setting in a cold room. If your cabinet will stand somewhere that gets cold in winter, a EuroCave bought through Wine Enthusiast is worth the higher price.
Long-term aging of a serious collection
If you are laying down wines for ten years or more under natural cork, EuroCave’s humidity control and charcoal filter are real advantages, and the La Premiere and Pure lines are built for exactly that. If most of your wine is opened within a few years, the Allavino VSWR177-1SR20 at a steady 55 F stores it well for much less.
A mid-size collection
The EuroCave La Premiere S holds 50 bottles as shipped, or up to 98 with shelves removed, in a freestanding cabinet 26.8 inches wide and 37.8 inches tall. The Allavino VSWR56-1BL20 holds 56 bottles in a cabinet 23.4 inches wide and 33.9 inches tall, and it vents through the front so it can be built in.
You love the European look but not the price
Wine coolers have come a long way in style. To my eye, the Ca’Lefort 24 Inch 52 Bottle looks on par with some pricier EuroCave models. It is a built-in dual zone cooler, and it does not have EuroCave’s heating or humidity control, so choose it for the look and the price, not as a like-for-like replacement.

For two zones, EuroCave’s Pure L Dual Zone holds 170 bottles with an upper zone of 41 to 52 F and a lower zone of 59 to 68 F, and Wine Enthusiast lists it for a room between 50 and 86 F. The Allavino VSWR172-2SR20 holds 172 bottles with zones of 40 to 55 F and 55 to 65 F, per its owner’s manual.
What It Costs to Run and Own
After the first year, both brands cover only the parts of the sealed system or compressor, so a later repair means paying for labor. With Allavino, the owner also pays freight. With EuroCave, service in the US runs through Wine Enthusiast, which says it handles customer care and appliance maintenance for the brand. Ask about service in your area before you buy, because a cabinet this size is not easy to ship back.
On electricity, Allavino’s Energy Guide label gives 556 kWh a year for the VSWR172-2. The Wine Enthusiast spec sheets we used do not give a yearly figure for the EuroCave models, so we cannot compare running cost fairly. The energy-efficient wine fridge guide compares listed yearly use across brands.
How to Make an Allavino or EuroCave Cabinet Last
Give both brands room to breathe. An Allavino tower needs its front grille kept clear and vacuumed a few times a year. A EuroCave La Premiere or Pure needs space behind it, because that is where it vents. Check that the door gasket seals all the way around, and let a new cabinet settle at its set temperature for a day before you load it fully.
EuroCave adds two jobs of its own: keep the humidity cassette topped up when the hygrometer shows a low reading, and replace the charcoal filter when the control panel asks for it. Neither brand belongs in a room that gets hotter than its listed maximum, 86 F for the EuroCave models we checked and 90 F for Allavino.
How to Choose Between Allavino and EuroCave
Step-by-Step Selection Guide
- Decide built-in or freestanding: if the cabinet goes into cabinetry, choose a front-venting Allavino tower or a EuroCave built-in model, never a La Premiere or Pure.
- Check the room: if it can get colder than about 50 F, EuroCave’s heating is a real advantage; if it can get hotter than 86 F, neither brand belongs there.
- Be honest about how long you keep wine: humidity control matters for long aging under cork, much less for wine opened within a few years.
- Decide where you will buy: Allavino can be ordered on Amazon; EuroCave is bought through Wine Enthusiast at a higher price tier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is EuroCave a good brand?
Yes. EuroCave has made wine cabinets in France since 1976, and its cabinets combine cooling, heating, humidity control and odor filtering, which few brands offer together. The trade-offs are the higher price tier, rear venting on the large freestanding models, and the fact that in the US you can only buy it through Wine Enthusiast.
Is EuroCave worth the money?
It is worth it if you age wine for many years, keep the cabinet in a room that gets cold, or want humidity control. If your wine is opened within a few years and the cabinet sits in a normal living space, an Allavino or another well-made compressor cooler stores it well for much less.
Where is EuroCave manufactured?
In France. EuroCave says it was founded in 1976 in Fourmies, in northern France, and that it designs and manufactures all of its wine cabinets in France.
Where can I buy EuroCave in the United States?
Through Wine Enthusiast, which describes itself as the exclusive US distributor of EuroCave. We found seven older EuroCave cabinet listings on Amazon on October 6, 2026, and none of them could be ordered.
Is Allavino a good wine fridge brand?
Yes, for buyers who need a built-in compressor cooler. Its front-venting towers are its strength, and our ratings for current Allavino models run from 3.6 to 4.5 out of 5. The warranty is short on labor, and noise figures are not published for most models. The Allavino brand guide covers every model we review, and our Allavino vs Vinotemp comparison sets it against another American brand.
Which brand of wine fridge is considered the best?
There is no single best brand. EuroCave is often named for long-term aging, and Allavino is a strong choice for built-in storage you can order on Amazon. The right one depends on where the cooler goes, how many bottles you keep and how long you age them. Our brand guides compare each maker’s strengths and weaknesses.
Allavino or EuroCave: Which Should You Buy?
Final Word
Buy Allavino if the cabinet will be built in, sits in a normal living space and you want to order it on Amazon. Buy EuroCave if it will stand in a room that gets cold, or you are aging wine for many years and want humidity control, and you are happy to buy through Wine Enthusiast at a higher price.
